In a significant development aimed at preserving India’s rich cultural heritage, the Bombay High Court has directed the collaboration between UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the safeguarding of ancient rocks in the Konkan region.
The PIL, filed by concerned citizens and environmentalists, emphasized the urgent need for the protection and conservation of ancient rock formations that hold immense historical and cultural significance in the Konkan belt of Maharashtra.
These ancient rock formations, some of which date back thousands of years, serve as valuable repositories of historical information, providing insights into early human civilization, art, and culture. However, over the years, these sites have faced threats from various factors including erosion, defacement, and unchecked human activities.
Responding to the PIL, the Bombay High Court has taken a proactive stance by directing UNESCO and ASI to collaborate on a comprehensive plan for the preservation and restoration of these ancient rocks.
